The Voucher That Wasn't: A Forwarding Bug Let Nomic Mint 39.84 nBTC Against No Bitcoin

0xCred

Hook

On June 25, a mint event settled on Nomic. It looked routine. On July 17, a second cluster of transactions moved through the same path. No alarm fired. It took more than two months โ€” until this reporting cycle โ€” before the Osmosis community was told that 39.84 nBTC sitting inside the allBTC basket may not be backed by a single satoshi of Bitcoin. Mint and redeem are frozen. The basket holds 110.57 allBTC. Roughly 36.03% of its backing is now in question.

I watch the blockchain, not the ticker. For those two months, the chain was telling a different story than the price was.

Context

Here is the architecture, stripped of marketing. Nomic is a Bitcoin bridge that issues nBTC. Those units are forwarded over IBC into Osmosis, where they become one component of allBTC โ€” a synthetic basket asset backed by a mix of Bitcoin variants. allBTC is not a governance token and it does not pay yield. Its pitch is narrower and far more dangerous: it is supposed to be Bitcoin, or close enough that you can hold it, pool it, and post it as collateral.

The path is multi-hop: Bitcoin mainnet, then Nomic custody, then IBC forwarding, then the Osmosis basket, then DEX liquidity pools. Every hop is a trust boundary. Nomic's custody relies on a signature set requiring more than 90% of signers to approve reserve payments. Osmosis manages the allBTC contract through a 3-of-6 moderator sub-DAO empowered to pause pools, flag an asset as corrupt, and โ€” on paper โ€” seize BTC.

Two centralized anchors, stacked. Neither one watches the forwarding logic. That is the blind spot this event exposed.

I lived inside basket mechanics during the 2020 DeFi summer, running 50 ETH through Sushiswap liquidity mining and logging impermanent loss in real time for four months. The 220% return taught me less than the drawdowns did: when a pool's internal accounting drifts from the assets it claims to hold, the drift is silent until it is sudden. allBTC is that pool at a larger scale, with a colder failure mode.

Core

SlowMist classified the incident as a double-spend on the Nomic bridge. Osmosis stated plainly that neither the chain nor IBC was compromised. Read those two sentences together and the failure surface narrows to exactly one place: the self-built forwarding middleware โ€” the component that takes a mint on Nomic and asserts to Osmosis that the corresponding Bitcoin exists.

The system minted false vouchers. That is the whole mechanism. A voucher is a claim; a claim is only as good as the verification behind it. Somewhere in the forwarding path, a credential was accepted โ€” most likely re-submitted โ€” without the corresponding BTC being locked or validated on the source side. This is not a cryptography failure. It is a bookkeeping failure wearing a bridge's clothes.

Based on my audit experience, I have seen this shape before. In 2017 I manually walked three ICO ERC-20 contracts and found a reentrancy hole in one sale contract before the public offering opened. The flaw was never exotic. It was an ordering assumption โ€” code that trusted a state update had already completed. Forwarding bridges fail the same way. They trust that a voucher in hand corresponds to a state change that actually occurred. When anti-replay has a gap, or when the signature-set vote and the real state update drift out of sequence, the same claim gets honored twice.

The anti-replay logic here either did not exist or did not fire. I don't buy the "sophisticated attacker" framing that always follows these events. A replay working means the guard was absent, not that the attacker was brilliant.

Now the reserves. Of 110.57 allBTC in circulation, 39.84 nBTC is the questioned component โ€” roughly 36.03% of the basket lacking effective Bitcoin backing. Other backing accounts for about 70.73 BTC-equivalent and remains valid. 22.65 BTC has been frozen, awaiting governance disposition. Even in the best case โ€” full recovery โ€” the basket carries a structural shortfall of about 17.19 BTC.

That last number is the one that matters. This is not a liquidity mismatch. It is a solvency gap. A liquidity mismatch resolves with time. A solvency gap resolves with a haircut or with someone else's money.

The someone else is already named. The plan on the table pulls from two sources: governance confiscation of the 22.65 BTC, plus accumulated Bitcoin in the community pool. Read that slowly. The community pool is the collective reserve of everyone holding OSMO and providing liquidity. Framing a bridge bug as a community-pool expense means every LP subsidizes a forwarding-layer defect they had no part in creating.

There is no yield flywheel here, no APR subsidy spiral, so this is not a Ponzi. It is something colder and more ordinary: a basket whose holders' claims exceed the real assets underneath. The implicit net value of one allBTC is now below one BTC, and whether flat redemption returns depends on a governance vote, not on a contract guarantee.

I have run this pattern before. In 2022, after Terra, I studied staking withdrawal limits across L1s, found the bottleneck sitting inside FTX-linked venues, and moved 100 ETH to cold storage while shorting the affected governance tokens through perpetuals. I did not predict the collapse. I read the constraint. The constraint here is identical in kind: what is frozen, who controls the unfreeze, and how long holders can be kept in suspension. That suspension window is where value quietly leaks out.

Last year I reverse-engineered an AI trading protocol advertising 40% annual returns and found the hidden slippage that erased the entire edge. The tell was never the headline number. It was the missing line in the execution path. That is exactly where I would look here.

Contrarian

Everyone will frame this as a bridge hack. That framing is lazy, and it hides the part that should worry holders more.

The technical damage is bounded. The governance damage is not. The forwarding logic can be patched. The 22.65 BTC can, in principle, be returned. But look at the two control points: Nomic's signature set needs more than 90% approval to move reserve funds, and the Osmosis 3-of-6 moderator sub-DAO can flag a component as corrupt. One is high-threshold, slow, and resistant to any single bad actor. The other is small, fast, and thinly representative. Confiscating Bitcoin requires both to cooperate.

As of this reporting, none of the latest twenty on-chain proposals match a confiscation or capital-replenishment action. More than 2.5 months after the incident. Code is law, but human greed is the bug โ€” and here the bug is not greed, it is hesitation. When recovery depends on two separate governance bodies agreeing, the schedule is set by whoever benefits from delay. That is a cross-protocol governance coupling failure, and it is more fragile than any single-sig setup.

The quiet part matters more. The minting happened June 25. The activity ran July 17. The public learned months later. Anyone who bought, sold, or pooled allBTC inside that window traded an asset whose backing was already broken and did not know it. That is an information-asymmetry market, and it is a worse governance signal than the missing anti-replay check. Smart contracts don't lie. People decide when to tell the truth.

Takeaway

Strip the narrative and watch four signals.

First, the confiscation proposal. If the 22.65 BTC seizure never reaches the chain, the shortfall widens toward 39.84 BTC and a real haircut replaces the delay story. Second, Nomic's signature-set vote. Approval above 90% partially rescues the basket; rejection pushes allBTC toward write-down. Third, the community pool's BTC balance against the 17.19 BTC gap. If the pool cannot cover it, dilution or haircut is the only arithmetic left.

Fourth, the secondary market. Watch for allBTC quoting below 0.9. With mint and redeem frozen, there is no arbitrage channel to pull a discount back to par. A frozen basket cannot self-correct. That discount is the market's honest estimate of the haircut, and it will lead the governance vote, not follow it.

The real lesson is not that bridges break. It is that a basket is only as honest as its least-verified component โ€” and that trust-minimized bridges just received the best marketing they never paid for. So ask the question nobody on the allBTC side wants to answer out loud: which of the remaining basket components came in over a forwarding path that nobody has audited yet?
